Deutschland im April 1945: Michael Hansen, mit seiner Familie als Kind von Hamburg in die USA ausgewandert, kehrt als GI zurück und übernimmt einen Auftrag des Geheimdienstes. Er soll herausfinden, welche Rolle der Eugeniker Alfred Ploetz für das Naziregime spielte.

Während andernorts noch der Endkampf tobt, bricht Hansen von Frankfurt nach Bayern auf und bezieht Quartier am Ammersee. In einem Münchner Antiquariat findet er den Dissidenten Wagner, langjähriger Freund des Eugenikers Alfred Ploetz. Von ihm lässt er sich die Geschichte ihrer Freundschaft erzählen, die Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in Breslau begann und die beiden jungen Studenten über Zürich bis nach Amerika führte - und mitten hinein in die Auseinandersetzung um die beste gesellschaftliche Ordnung, den Kommunismus marxistischer Prägung und die idealistische Gemeinde Ikarien, die vom französischen Revolutionär Étienne Cabet in Amerika gegründet wurde.

Hansen kommt durch die Lebensbeichte Wagners dem faustischen Pakt auf die Spur, den der idealistische Forscher Ploetz mit den Nazis einging, und dem schweren Schicksal, das Wagner durch seine regimekritische Haltung ereilte, zu entgehen. Und er nutzt den anarchischen Raum, der sich im Nachkriegsdeutschland eröffnet, für zahlreiche Abenteuer insbesondere erotischer Natur.
