Η σημασία του κοινωνικού σχεδιασμού και της αξιολόγησης στην αποτελεσματικότερη άσκηση της κοινωνικής πολιτικής έγινε κατάδηλη κυρίως στη μεταπολεμική περίοδο, όταν τα κοινωνικά προβλήματα οξύνθηκαν και έγινε συνείδηση ότι αυτά μόνο με την κρατική παρέμβαση μπορούσαν να αντιμετωπιστούν. Οι τομείς προς τους οποίους επικεντρώθηκε το ενδιαφέρον αφορούν στην ανάπτυξη των διαδικασιών και στη βελτίωση των μεθοδολογικών και αναλυτικών εργαλείων που χρησιμοποιούνται κατά το σχεδιασμό και την αξιολόγηση. Η χώρα μας εμφανίζει καθυστερήσεις τόσο στο θεωρητικό επίπεδο όσο και σε εκείνο των εφαρμογών, και οι λόγοι μπορούν να αναζητηθούν στην περιορισμένης έκτασης ασκούμενη κοινωνική πολιτική μέχρι το τελευταίο τέταρτο του περασμένου αιώνα και στο χαμηλό επίπεδο των κοινωνικών επιστημών και ιδιαιτέρως της κοινωνικής έρευνας. Δεδομένου ότι αυτή η έκδοση έχει τη μορφή εγχειριδίου, για την πληρέστερη κατανόηση των διαδικασιών και μεθόδων παρατέθηκαν πραγματικές εφαρμογές από το χώρο τόσο του σχεδιασμού όσο και της αξιολόγησης.
